Bhotekoshi Flood Educational Support Program, Rasuwa
Location: Shree Setibhume Secondary School, Ramche, Kalika Rural Municipality-1, Rasuwa
Project Date: 1 October 2026
Program: Emergency Educational Material Support Program
Students Supported: 354
Implemented by: Sole Encounters Foundation
Project Status: Completed
Project Overview
Following the Bhotekoshi flash floods of August 2026, communities across Rasuwa and neighbouring districts faced disruption to education, transport, household livelihoods and access to essential supplies. School infrastructure was among the sectors affected, placing additional pressure on students and families already dealing with the consequences of the disaster.
Sole Encounters Foundation learned that students at Shree Setibhume Secondary School in Ramche, Kalika Rural Municipality-1, Rasuwa needed basic educational materials. After communicating directly with school leadership, we organised an Emergency Educational Material Support Program and travelled to the school on 1 October 2026.
During the project, 354 students received stationery, learning materials and sports supplies. The school serves students from Early Childhood Development through Grade 12, with approximately 356 students enrolled.
The field visit also helped us understand conditions beyond the immediate educational need. Our team observed damaged roads, difficult transport routes, disrupted supply systems and continuing reconstruction. School leadership also identified 19 students facing particularly difficult family circumstances who may require further assessment and support.
The project was a focused educational response designed around a need identified directly by the school.
Why the Project Was Needed
The Bhotekoshi flood affected schools, households, roads and local supply systems across the region. Families recovering from disaster faced additional expenses and disrupted livelihoods. For students, access to basic stationery and learning materials could become another challenge. The school identified educational supplies as an immediate and practical priority.
Why We Chose Shree Setibhume Secondary School
Sole Encounters Foundation contacted the school before deciding what assistance to provide. School leadership explained that students needed educational materials to continue their studies. We therefore based the project on an identified local need rather than choosing supplies without consultation, helping ensure that the assistance was relevant and useful.
About Shree Setibhume Secondary School
Shree Setibhume Secondary School is a community school in Ramche, Kalika Rural Municipality-1, Rasuwa. It provides education from Early Childhood Development through Grade 12 and has approximately 356 enrolled students. The school serves children of different ages from Ramche and surrounding communities in Rasuwa.
Educational Materials Distributed
On 1 October 2026, Sole Encounters Foundation provided stationery, educational supplies and sports materials to 354 students. These items were selected following communication with the school. The support helped students access basic resources needed for classroom participation while reducing part of the immediate education-related cost faced by families.
Our Journey to Rasuwa
The journey to Rasuwa provided a direct view of post-flood transport conditions. Damage to established roads required vehicles to use difficult alternative routes through Nuwakot and Rasuwa. Reaching Kalikasthan took approximately 13 hours because of damaged roads, rainfall, construction work and unstable travel conditions.
Road and Supply Conditions
During the field visit, our team observed muddy and damaged road sections, temporary access routes, excavators and ongoing reconstruction. Transport disruption also affected the movement of food, medicine, household goods and construction materials. Reliable road access remains important for schools, healthcare, agriculture, local businesses and wider community recovery.
Meeting Students and the School Community
The visit allowed our team to meet students, teachers, school leaders and community members directly. These conversations helped us understand how families were managing after the disaster. They also revealed needs that would not have been visible through material distribution alone, including concerns about particularly vulnerable students.
19 Students Identified for Further Assessment
School leadership identified 19 students facing particularly serious family circumstances following the disaster. Their individual needs require careful assessment before further support is planned. Possible areas of concern include education expenses, food, clothing, transportation, household conditions and emotional wellbeing, depending on each student's circumstances.
Immediate Project Impact
The most direct result of the project was that 354 students received educational and sports materials requested by their school. The visit also established direct communication between Sole Encounters Foundation and school leadership and provided a clearer understanding of educational needs, transport difficulties and household vulnerability in the community.
What We Learned
The project reinforced the importance of listening before providing assistance. Disaster recovery involves more than rebuilding physical infrastructure. Education, household income, transportation, access to supplies and children's wellbeing are closely connected. Direct field visits help organisations understand these relationships and make future assistance more responsive to actual community needs.
Responsible Support Beyond the Project
This project could not address every consequence of the flood. Educational materials cannot rebuild homes, restore livelihoods or replace lost income. Our aim was therefore specific and realistic: respond to an immediate educational need that we could responsibly support while learning more about conditions facing students and families.
Future Follow-Up
Sole Encounters Foundation intends to remain in communication with Shree Setibhume Secondary School. A priority will be understanding the circumstances of the 19 students identified by school leadership and determining whether responsible further assistance is possible. Any future support will be based on verified needs and available Foundation capacity.
Thank You to the School Community
We thank the principal, vice-principal, teachers and staff of Shree Setibhume Secondary School for welcoming our team and helping coordinate the program. We are equally grateful to the students, families and community members who shared their experiences and helped us better understand the challenges facing the community.
Remembering Those Affected by the Flood
Sole Encounters Foundation extends its sympathy to families and communities affected by the Bhotekoshi flood. We remember those who lost their lives, loved ones, homes, property and livelihoods. We hope the students and families rebuilding their lives continue to find stability, support and opportunity throughout the recovery process.
